#CWPLeader April
The CWP Teacher Consultants we celebrate in April are educators who are Teacher Librarians, after-school program coordinators, summer youth writing program coordinators, or family literacy program leaders.
While the California Writing Project is known for academic year and summer programs for teachers, its programs designed specifically for students and families are an integral part of the work and outreach of a strong local Writing Project.
The Teacher Consultants we honor and many of their local Writing Project colleagues lead the way. These leaders sponsor after-school or lunchtime writing clubs for their students or design Maker spaces in school libraries. They create summer writing programs to enlarge students’ writing repertoires and expand their confidence. Students explore writing with technology, writing in nature, writing and photography, writing memoirs in comic form, writing for college entrance requirements, writing for college and career readiness, writing to make change, just to name a few of their summer options. Some of these teachers lead summer Migrant Education Writing Academies and some create educational support programs for communities in developing countries.
These teachers also provide students and their families access to programs and resources that strengthen the literacy and learning connections between home and school. Programs include Family Writing Nights for parents, their children, and grandparents, as well as Family Literacy Workshops or Parent University for parents and guardians. Resources include CWP’s award-winning handbook for parents, Because Writing Matters: Helping Your Children Become Skilled, Confident Writers In and Beyond School.

These teachers help their local Writing Project give students, especially those for whom literacy is in greatest jeopardy, opportunities to write and improve their writing and opportunities for families and communities to write together and celebrate writing.
Congratulations and thank you for all you do for students, your colleagues, and your Writing Project.
